The availability of illegal drugs, such as cheap methamphetamines and the highly potent Burmese heroin, combined with the lack of drug awareness drives Cambodia's drug use. Drug addiction is a relatively new social issue. The government recently built several drug detention centers in recent years, however there are no education and training for rehabilitation. The country's communist past treats such social ills by doing street sweeps of the homeless and drug addicts and placing them in detention centers to be re-educated through physical training, and in some instances, physical abuse.
